George Diller and Assistant Launch Director Omar Baez discuss spacecraft readiness. MESSENGER is a scientific study of the planet Mercury, the least explored terrestrial (rocky) planet in our Solar System. Understanding how Mercury was formed is essential to understanding the other terrestrial planets and their evolution. The MESSENGER spacecraft will orbit Mercury after making three flybys of the planet. MESSENGER will investigate six key scientific questions about Mercury's environment with a set of miniaturized space instruments. The spacecraft will enter Mercury orbit in March 2011 and examine the planet for one Earth year.
